I really don't think they wanted me to grow up. I wore a long, pageboy haircut and velvet shorts until I was 6 years old, scarcely appropriate for a small boy in a mining camp. More than anything, I wanted to wear long pants like most of my contemporaries, but these were denied me until I was twelve.
