Of J.B. Priestley during the WW2:
Playing on a fuddled fiddle, somewhere in the muddled middle.
From Alan Watkins in The Observer (28 September 1987):
'Dr David Owen has a bit of a cheek saying that the new SDP ought not to be playing on a fuddled fiddle, somewhere in the muddled middle. The words were most recently used by Mr Roy Jenkins of the old SDP. They were first used by Bevan of J.B. Priestley during the last war. Mr Jenkins acknowledges his debt to Bevan. Dr Owen should likewise acknowledge his debt to Mr Jenkins. There is nothing new under the sun.'
