With the exception of poetry or eloquence—those immaterial arts which only require a word or a pen—all the other arts require a material: blocks of marble for the sculptor, canvas and colors for the painter. Only the musician requires a performer. That is why we can so rarely be given the pleasure of hearing the soul of a great musician in his work.
