The stories gets passed on and the truth gets passed over. As the saying goes. Which I reckon some would take as meaning that the truth cant compete. But I don't believe that. I think that when the lies are all told and forgot the truth will be there yet. It don't move about from place to place and it don't change from time to time. You cant corrupt it any more than you can salt salt. You cant corrupt it because that's what it is. It's the thing you're talking about. I've heard it compared to the rock — maybe in the bible—and I wouldn't disagree with that. But it'll be here even when the rock is gone. I'm sure they's people would disagree with that. Quite a few, in fact. But I never could find out what any of them did believe.

You can tell it any way you want but that's the way it is. I should of done it and I didn't. And some part of me has never quit wishin I could go back. And I cant. I didn't know you could steal your own life. And I didn't know that it would bring you no more benefit than about anything else you might steal. I think I done the best with it I knew how but it still wasn't mine. It never has been.

It's not about knowing where you are. It's about thinking you got there without taking anything with you. Your notions about starting over. Or anybody's. You don't start over. That's what it's about. Every step you take is forever. You cant make it go away. None of it.

I cant back up and start over. But I don't see the point in slobbering over it. And I cant see where it would make me feel better to be able to point a finger at somebody else.

Just take me with you. Please. I cant. Please, Papa. I cant. I cant hold my son dead in my arms. I thought I could but I cant.

It takes very little to govern good people. Very little. And bad people cant be governed at all. Or if they could I never heard of it.
